Thanks for a Different Kind of Crazy

The whole world is nuts. It has always been crazy, but the current generation has put a fine point on insanity. People who once would have been restrained in a straitjacket and carted off to a “special” hospital are instead in Congress–either elected or breaking down the doors in order to find the gift shop. Incidentally, some of those who were elected to Congress are not nearly as well behaved as the insurrectionists. The only gift shop they can find is the one in the cloakrooms where they meet lobbyists.

Amid all this destructive craziness, there is another type of craziness that is calming and soothing. The perpetrator, alas, is not American–at least as far as we know. Like the mysterious characters like the Shadow or the Phantom of years ago, he/she/they lurk in the shadows. Like Mandrake the Magician they create diversions and when no one is looking, then sneak in and do their worst. I call it their worst, because, it is so far out of sync with most people.

But it is a wonderful worst. I’m speaking, of course, of Banksy, who is currently on a self-proclaimed spraycation. subjecting people to artistic commentary. Many people enjoy it. Others do not possess the mental capacity to understand it on any level.

THAT is art.
